We had our Advanced English class again today. After the class was over and we were just sitting around chatting a bit, one of the people there mentioned a seer in Bulgaria, I think it was. This woman saw in a vision many years ago that when America elected a black man as president, within just a few months Russia would invade America and take it over. Or at least America would fall and no longer be a world power. I kind of forget exactly how it was supposed to go...
It is interesting to me to hear this. Actually, over the past few weeks, since the election, I have heard various versions of this story. Plus there is also the claim by some professor in Russia that America will be destroyed by the end of 2009 or 2010.
And of course, there is the hype going on about the world ending in 2012. That I've read on the internet, actually coming across it the first time way last summer some time.
I spent some time finding out what it was all about last week. You know, the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, I think on exactly 12/21/2012, the winter solstice. And there are prophecies by various other "prophets" indicating that the world would end in that year, and some again on that very day.
It's enough to scare a person, especially if that person is not grounded on the Rock, Jesus Christ.
Of course, Jesus himself said the world would end some day. The Apostle Peter said it, too. The Apostle John said it. It's going to happen. It might happen in our life time. Who knows?
Not me.
But I am reminded of the church in which I grew up, a church where the pastor taught End Times a lot. Mel was also raised in a church like that. Maybe that is why we are presbyterian now - kind of in reaction against all the end time stuff? Oh, we still believe that Jesus is going to return some day - and that it might indeed be soon - but all the charts and diagrams, bears and eagles, gogs and magogs, and so forth and so on - well, they've taken a back seat. I can't say that they have been removed from my mind, that is not possible I don't think, unless I develope dementia or alzheimers or something. But Kissinger has come and gone, 1988 has come and gone, 2000 has come and gone, and now we face 2012.
I wonder if there will always be hysteria about these things? Or is it just a part of the times in which we live, a paranoid time in history?
I don't know.
I do know that it makes me uncomfortable, though. That's where my training as a kid kicks in and a little tremor of fear runs up my spine and I wonder "Is O the anti-Christ? Or P? Or...??"
I wish that part of my childhood had been different. It would be nice to not have all that "info" stored in my brain, waiting for the right key word to start the memories and thoughts flying back into active thought processes.
Sigh.
Christ will return when the time is right. I am His child, what have I to fear? 2012 will arrive in due time and all the political and natural disasters that are ordained to happen between now and then will happen just as God wills them to happen. Nothing more, nothing less.
I can only wait and see. Just like we lived through 1988 and Y2K and everything else since 1948.
I know who holds the future and I know who holds me.
That is enough.
