God's Own Music

I am not a big music fan. Sorry Kara, Peter, Andrew, Mel, Ron J. and a host of others whose love of music makes up a big part of their lives. :( I don't know why, for sure, except maybe it's partially because my mother does not like music. She has a good reason, though. She was in a car accident as an older teenager and had damage to her ears. She doesn't hear "music", she hears "noise". We listened to very little music when I was a kid growing up because of that.

Me? Well, I love silence and the sounds of nature more than anything else. (Ok, we could get into specifics, like I love the sound of children's laughter, and I love the sound of my husbands voice as he preaches, and so forth, but that's not the point of this post. heh heh)

Nature sounds? Yes, I do like nature sounds. I love nature sounds. The sound of ocean waves crashing on a rocky beach. Birds chirping and singing and squabbling together. The wind sighing through the grasses. Aspen leaves quaking in a summer breeze. Molecules of air beating against my eardrums as I stand in total silence in the dark on the edge of the Grand Canyon and listen to emptiness.

So you've got to know what I listened to this morning immediately after seeing this on geology.com.

Some sand dunes can produce a humming sound under the right conditions. Researchers in this video try to determine how and why these dunes produce sound.

And of course, the one that immediately followed the Singing Sand Dunes - well, I had to watch it, too, because it was home and I was just there a few weeks ago and I've written about this place before. Hear a happy sigh. :) :) :)

Great Sand Dunes National Park

A trip to the Sand Dunes over Memorial Day weekend is a long-standing tradition in my family. This year for a variety of reasons, it was just John, Kara, Stirling, Mel and me who went.

The water in Medano Creek is very warm and comes in waves. It's really cool the way it moves kids downstream and how it washes the sand out from under your feet while you just stand there. You can sink several inches, but it's not quick sand.

The dunes were beautiful. There were a gazillion people there this year, but we found a place not too far upstream that wasn't too crowded.

Oh, I love my homeland!! It is so beautiful!!!

How I miss my grandson and family.
