Jan. 11, 2011 CONSTANTA, Romania - Dozens of starlings were found dead in the town of Constanta, a small village located 160 miles east of Bucharest, Romania. After local veterinary ran tests on the birds' livers, they discovered that the birds had drank themselves to death.

Update: There was nothing mysterious about the death of a flock of birds in Romania last week -- they were simply drunk, veterinarians said.

I thought this was a joke. The first time I read it the update was not there. So, today when I saw the update, I clicked on the "news" and this is the article from that:

Dozens of starlings were found dead in the town of Constanta, a small village located 160 miles east of Bucharest, Romania. After local veterinary ran tests on the birds' livers, they discovered that the birds had drank themselves to death.
The birds had eaten leftover grapes left from local wine makers who were making the wine and failed to cleanup the mess in a timely manner.
Residents of the small town alerted authorities after they discovered the dead birds on the outskirt of town. The locals were worried that it could be a case of avian flu, but the local DSVSA ruled out that possibility quickly.
The Starling is a small bird that has bright blue and orange coloring and found all over eastern Europe.
The incident came just days after news of bird and massive death of fish had hit several countries, including the United States. With all the media attention around the globe people are bound to jump conclusions, but there will usually be reasonable explanations.
Actually, I found it very Ukrainian - sounded like a Ukrainian joke. :-)

Oct 23 2010, Kiev/Ukraine -- About 1,500 birds have been found dead on an Ukraine island, authorities said Saturday.
Most of the birds were cormorants, but a large number of herring gulls were also found on Ukraine's Bolshoi Dzendzik Island, the emergencies ministry said.
Specialists from the local veterinary office have taken samples for laboratory testing to establish the cause of the birds' death.
